Tuesday
We started our Fairly Tale theme off by reading "The Little Red Hen". Students then practiced sequencing and retelling by cutting and gluing events from the story into the correct sequence and then using them to help them retell the story. Ask your child if they can tell you about what happened at the beginning, middle and ending of "The Little Red Hen".

We also read another version of this fairy tale called "The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza" Ask your child if they can tell you what was the same and what was different between the two stories.

Wednesday
We continued to talk about measurement words. Today we talked about height and brainstormed things that were tall and things the were short and drew and wrote about it in our journals. Ask your child if they can tell you some things that are tall and some things that are short.

Thursday
We observed the changes we noticed in some of our plants (sadly only a few are growing...) We drew and wrote about some of the changes we saw. We also read a non-fiction book about "roots" and we learned what the roots job is for the plant. Ask your child:

  • How have the plants changed?
  • What is the roots job?

We also celebrated culture day! Both classes had a sharing circle where each child was invited to share something important about themselves, their family, culture or traditions. Some students also talked about their special clothing they chose to wear to school today! The afternoon class was even invited by their grade 3 buddies to have a fashion show!

Friday
To kick off Teddy Bear week next week, the PM class read a non-fiction book about bears. Then we wrote about some facts we learned in our journals. Ask your child what they learned about bears!

We also painted a picture of a spring cherry blossom tree where we used Q-tips to paint the blossoms!

Teddy Bear Week!
Next week is Teddy Bear Week!! Students are invited to bring a stuffy from home to keep at school for the week. The stuffed toys will be incorporated into our learning activities for the week. We hope to end the week with a Teddy Bear Picnic (Weather permitting) Some things to consider when choosing a stuffy:
  • can be any size but please make sure it is small enough to sit on a shelf and for your child to carry (no giant stuffed toys please)
  • choose a stuffy that your child will be okay leaving at school for the whole week (not one that is important for sleeping routines)
  • choose a stuffy that is in reasonable repair (no holes or stuffing falling out)
Remember, this is intended to be a soft stuffed toy, not toy cars, figurines, etc.

I have some extras on hand at school for anyone who may not have a stuffy!
