Weekly Update: May 4th-8th

This was a busy and very crafty week as we were working on a few surprises for a special someone in our life!! Make sure you check your backpacks this weekend! Students worked on a variety of art and craft tasks where they had lots of opportunity to strengthen their hand muscles and fine motor skills and explore their creativity with different art mediums!

Happy Mothers Day to all of our Moms!

In honor of "Hats on for Mental Health Day" we also learned about our brains! We read a book called "Its My Brain" where we learned all of the superpowers our brains have and all of the things it does of us. (Its in charge of our thoughts, feelings, learning, movements, decisions and more!

We also learned how we can take care of our brain and our mental health, things such as:
  • getting enough sleep
  • limiting screen time
  • getting exercise
  • eating healthy foods
  • talking about our feelings
  • taking some time to relax
  • wearing a helmet when we ride our bike, scooter or skateboard
  • wearing a helmet when we go ice skating or roller skating

Weekly Update: Last week of April!

Wow how time is flying!! It is really hard to believe we just finished our last week of April and are heading into our last week of school! We had a fun and exciting week of learning! Read below to see all of the exciting things we have been doing!

Sprit Day Next Week!
Wednesday will be "Hats on for Mental Health" day. Students are invited to wear a hat or head covering to school this day as we raise awareness of the importance of taking care of our mental heath the same way we take care of our physical health!

Monday
We talked about the changes that happen as the seasons change and we head into spring. Then we drew a picture of ourselves in the spring and added lots of spring details, such as flowers, butterflies, bees, flowers on trees, and green grass. Ask your child what details they drew in their pictures!

Tuesday
Students had a chance to show off their writing skills! We looked at a picture prompt and brainstormed all kinds of great and creative ideas! Then students were able to write anything they wanted about the picture. We got some really great sentences!! It was hard to believe these came from kindergarteners!! Ask your child what they wrote!!

Wednesday
In math, we continued our work on the different ways to compose (make) the number 10 as well as applying our knowledge to solve simple problems. We worked on this math story about ducks:

There are 10 ducks in a pond.
Some are big. Some are small.
How many are big and how many are small?

There are lots of right answers! Ask your child how they solved this problem!

Thursday
We had our nutrition presentation today. Students learned about the three food groups (fruits and vegetables, whole grains and proteins) They learned what "superpowers" each of these groups gives us! Students then had a chance to help prepare our snack. Some students were involved in chopping the fruit (with kid safe knives) and mixing the granola from scratch! Then students were able to choose the ingredients to make their yogurt parfait! Most of the students really liked it!! Ask your child to tell you about it!

Students came home with a recipe card for how the make the granola that we made today in class so you can make it at home if you are interested!

Friday
The afternoon class read a story called "Ten Black Dots". Then they used black dot stickers to create their own black dot pictures. Ask them what they made with their black dots.

We also learned some new sounds and practiced spelling words on our whiteboards. Students worked on spelling words with "ay" and "ow".
