Our First Week of Kindergarten!

Students had a great first week in Kindergarten! We spent our week learning all of the new routines, meeting new friends and checking out the toys and activities during centre time! We also got to go to gym and music for the first time! Read below to find out what we did this week!

Tuesday
We read the story "Llama Llama Misses Mama" about a little Llama on his first day of school and how he learns to love his mama AND school!

We drew a picture of ourselves on our first day of school. We will be learning and practicing how to draw people throughout the year, trying to include all of the important body parts, such as the head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hair, body, legs and arms.

Wednesday
We read the story "We Don't Eat our Classmates". We talked about "expected" and "unexpected" behaviours at school. Expected behaviours make our friends around us feel happy and safe, such as using kind voices, keeping our hands to ourselves and listening when someone is speaking" Unexpected behaviours make our friends feel scared or unhappy, such as screaming or yelling or hurting someone.

We also played a name game. Then we worked on writing our names by coloring the first letter in our name and trying to write or copy our names. Ask your child if they can tell you the first letter in their name. Can they write their name for you?

Thursday
We read a story called "Pete the Cat, Rocking in my School Shoes" Then we talked about thing like to do in our school shoes. Then we drew a picture of it in our journal. Ask your child what they like to do in their school shoes!

Dates/Reminders:

Red Folders
Check this red folder each day for notices or anything else coming home, then return it right away to your child's backpack. The teacher will check the folder each day for any forms that need to be returned. Try to make sure they red folder is in the backpack every day, even if there is nothing inside! Thank you!

  • There will be no school for Kindergarten on Fridays for the month of September
  • Fill out your Parent questionnaire and return to school
  • During drop off and pick up, please do not park in the Hug and Go. Even though it is beside our doors, it is a drop and go zone and is intended for older students. Please try to arrive early enough to park on one of the surrounding side streets and walk to the school! Thank you for your help in keeping this area safe and moving smoothly!
A Few Notes on Snack Time
  • Students in the PM class should eat lunch before coming the school. Due to our music and gym schedule, snack time will often be a little later in the afternoon.
  • Students get about 15 minutes to eat. A small snack is recommended. It is difficult for children to finish their food if there is too much in their bag. Lunch should be eaten at home, so please try to not send large meals as these take a long time to eat.
  • Any food not eaten will be sent back home. The exception would be things like yogurt that can not be resealed.
  • While we do not restrict many items, it is recommended that students do not bring juice boxes with their snack. From experience, many times students do not finish the juice boxes and they end up getting dumped in the sink at the end of each day. A filled water bottle is your best choice for drinks at school! Please to not send Pop or Gatorade.
