Weekly Update: January 12-15th

We had a great week of learning in Kindergarten! Read below to see what we have been learning! 

Monday 
In our journals, we did a directed drawing lesson of a car. After drawing, students used sentence starters to write a sentence about their car. Ask them what they wrote! 

Our goals in writing at this time of the year are: 

• drawing and coloring a detailed picture to share your ideas
• accurately copying the sentence starter (such as "The car is" or "I see") with clear, legible printing
• finishing the sentence with their own idea, recording sounds they hear from the beginning, middle or end of the word. (The focus is not on spelling accuracy at this point, but using knowledge of letters and sounds and associating them with the sounds they hear in words) 
• starting to use spaces between each new word 

Tuesday 

We learned a new lively letter. Ask your child: 

• What letter is this? 
• What sound (or sounds) does it make? 
• What are some words that begin with this word? 

Wednesday 

We continued our work on 3D shapes by working at 3D shape centres. Students had a chance to work with different materials to build and describe 3D shapes as well as exploring different ways to compare and sort 3D shapes. Ask your child to tell you about it! 

Thursday 

We continued our work on number by working with the number 5. First we worked together to figure out where to place number 5 on a number line and then we used the number line to figure out numbers that were bigger and smaller than 5. Then students used whiteboards the practice printing the numeral for 5 and making 5 with tally marks. Then we worked in our journal to show the number 5 in as many ways we we can. Ask your child to tell you about it! You can watch the video below to see some different ways to show the number 5!
